Sammy Crabbe, 2nd National Vice Chairperson of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dissented on the position taken by President John Dramani Mahama on the need for a new voters register ahead of next year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
As the debate on whether the Electoral Commission should introduce a fresh register or not is ongoing, President John Dramani has given an indication that he does not support the compilation of a new register but rather an audit of the existing one.
“What we have done in the past when you have a young register is to clean it up…so it is for the Electoral Commission to decide what it really needs to do,” President Mahama said at an event in France this week.
But Sammy Crabbe disagrees with President Mahama because the existing register is “sick” and therefore requires the introduction of a new one.
Speaking with Ekourba Gasi Gyasi, host of TOP FM’s morning show “YƐn NsƐmpa” on Friday, he stated that those who are going to clean the register it are those who caused its current state.
If a new one is being compiled, all the stakeholders will be more vigilant to ensure that a credible one is introduced. Failure to introduce a fresh register will create doubt in the minds of people about the authenticity of election results.
