Filing fees of presidential candidate is in accordance to their status and earnings, the minority leader in parliament has said.
Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency who doubles as the leader of the minority in parliament, the filing fee which is five times higher than the last election is just right compared to the earnings of the candidates.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has increased filing fees for Presidential aspirants in this year’s election by five folds after an agreement at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting Thursday.
The EC revealed that presidential candidates of the various political parties would be required to pay GH¢50,000.
Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said, ‘the price of a presidential candidate should be expensive, to tally with the position being vied for”.
Comparing the said amount to a property that could be derived, the minority leader said, a second hand corolla for a taxi or a two bedroom house might not be attained.
He concluded on Ghana Te Sen that, “in my view it is just the right amount for a presidential candidate to pay”.
