Nana Owusu Sekyere, a security expert has kicked against Yahya Jammeh’s state of emergency declaration saying that it has no legal backing.
“In the current state of Yahya Jammeh, he has exhausted all forms of mediation, negotiation and dialogue. He has realize that nothing goes in his favor and wants to use illegality to continue with his stay in government”.
He questioned the power behind declaring a state of emergency without consulting his parliament, the law making body of the country.
Mr Sekyere added that, the political system and the international community does not support his actions.
He believes that his (Yahya Jammeh’s) action is only aimed at preventing the swearing in of Adama Barrow, president elect tomorrow which the international community is not happy about.
According to him, leaving a country not being governed by a president leaves the country in a vacuum. This will create insecurity for The Gambia and Senegal, he stated.
In an interview with Nana Yaa Boamponsem on Ghana Te Sen, Top FMs morning show, he revealed this and said, such actions can jeopardize the security of the country.
The security expert said, Mr. Jammeh is very much aware he has lost touch with the Gambian community and hence wants to use all means to stay in power but the extension of his time in parliament lacks legal basis.
If Adama Barrow is not sworn in tomorrow, we wouldn’t know who is in charge of the country, because there is a president elect and the outgoing one is refusing to go, he said.
The international community can forcefully make Jammeh accept to step down if they work things out well to allow peace in The Gambia.
