Former President John Dramani Mahama might not be seen back again for the 2020 Presidential race on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress NDC as he feels relief not being a president.
The former president of Ghana indicated that life outside the presidency is a relief from all problems one has to go through in setting a developed country on the right pace.
He said, Africa is now setting up the institutions that will enhance governance hence all challenges pop up to the presidency directly making governance uneasy.
“In Africa, we are now setting up the institutions, and so as president you will have to deal with the challenges heads of state in the developed world don’t deal with”.
According to him, developed countries have the institutions working and functioning and can go for years without a leader but will not collapse just like the case of Belgium, he indicated.
But here in the developing world, you will have to build the institutions for a developing country making leadership very tough.
“I have always said it is tougher to be a president in a developing world than a developed world”… “In a developed world, the institutions have been established and are functioning”.
In an interview with Power FM in South Africa, the president said presiding over a developed country is much easier than a developing country.
He further added that, leaders in the developing world would have to deal with maternal and infant mortality, children immunization.
You will have to deal with agricultural productivity, issues of infrastructures but admitted that there are shorter cuts that can be used since technology has improved.
Reiterating all these challenges, one might be forced to say the president is so comfortable outside the presidency.
The Minority in Parliament was met with an unpleasant answer from Mr Mahama when he was questioned whether he would contest on their behalf in the upcoming elections.
His answer was, “it is too early to decide on that”. Meanwhile some relatives have said it is time for the president to have time for his family by quitting politics for good.
