The Minister for Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has resolved the impasse between some Teacher Unions and the Ghana Education Service over the semester and trimester systems of education.
This follows the introduction of a new school calendar by the Ghana Education Service this academic year for pre-tertiary institutions in the country.
After the introduction of the semester system early this month, the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concern Teachers (CCT) as well as Tertiary Education Teachers Union protested against the new calendar.
The teacher unions and other stakeholders complained about the long hours of instruction as well as increasing the number of weeks children were to stay in school each term.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum in his bid to resolve the issue put in place a ministerial academic calendar committee who submitted their final report to the Minister for discussion before it was finally implemented.
A meeting organized by the GES last week to discuss the trimester calendar with the teacher unions ended inconclusively leading to a deepening of the agitations over the issue.
The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, after meeting the various stakeholders last Friday directed that the school calendar from the pre-tertiary level should be reverted to the trimester system for peace to prevail for the various stakeholders to continue their work.
Dr Adutwum was very upbeat that the restoration of the school calendar would bring peace into the education sector.
He urged the GES and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with the order for the good of the nation.
