Morocco produced another unforgettable night at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands on penalties in a dramatic Round of 32 clash to book their place in the Round of 16.

The Atlas Lions showed resilience, determination and composure under pressure on the matchday on Tuesday morning as they recovered from going behind late in the second half before eventually prevailing in a tense penalty shootout.

Morocco started the stronger side and nearly found the breakthrough midway through the first half. Neil El Aynaoui rose brilliantly inside the penalty area to meet a corner kick in the 20th minute, directing a powerful header towards the roof of the net, but Bart Verbruggen reacted superbly to produce an astonishing save.

Just moments later, Achraf Hakimi threatened again for Morocco after receiving a clever low pass outside the box. The full-back unleashed a fierce strike towards the top corner, only for Verbruggen to once again come to the rescue with an excellent reflex save.

The Netherlands struggled to create clear openings for much of the contest, although Micky van de Ven tested Bono shortly before half-time with an effort from the edge of the area. The Moroccan goalkeeper dealt comfortably with the attempt as the opening period ended level.

After a tightly contested second half, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 72nd minute. Cody Gakpo latched onto a pass inside the penalty area before firing a low finish into the middle of the net to hand the Netherlands a crucial lead.

The Dutch looked set to progress into the next round, but Morocco refused to give in. Deep into stoppage time, Chemsdine Talbi floated a clever lofted pass into the box where Issa Diop arrived unmarked to guide a close-range header into the top corner and dramatically level the match at 1-1.

Morocco nearly completed a sensational comeback moments later in extra time when Soufiane Rahimi created space inside the penalty area and struck towards the left corner, but Verbruggen produced another outstanding save to keep the Netherlands alive.

With neither side able to find a winner after extra time, the match was decided by penalties.

Teun Koopmeiners converted the opening spot kick for the Netherlands before Neil El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s first attempt. However, the momentum quickly shifted when Justin Kluivert crashed his effort against the post for the Dutch.

Soufiane Rahimi calmly converted for Morocco despite Verbruggen getting a hand to the ball, while Wout Weghorst responded with a powerful finish for the Netherlands. Chemsdine Talbi then buried his penalty into the right side of the net before Quinten Timber missed badly for the Dutch.

There was another twist when Achraf Hakimi struck the post with Morocco’s next attempt, giving the Netherlands hope. But Bono stepped up with a crucial save to deny Crysencio Summerville after the winger’s penalty lacked both power and precision.

That left Ismael Saibari with the opportunity to win the contest, and the Moroccan midfielder made no mistake, calmly slotting his effort into the bottom corner as the goalkeeper dived the wrong way.

The victory sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will now face co-hosts Canada as their remarkable World Cup journey continues.
