Ghana’s Parliament has been summoned for an emergency session today, cutting short the lawmakers’ recess. The sudden recall was prompted by a petition from Majority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who expressed discontent with Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s decision to adjourn the last meeting indefinitely on July 30.
In a letter dated July 31, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for Parliament to reconvene and address pressing government business. The emergency sitting will tackle crucial matters, including a financing agreement with the International Development Association, tax exemptions for beneficiaries of the One District, One Factory Programme, and issues related to the Ghana Financial Stability Fund. Several bills will also be considered.
Due to ongoing renovations in the main chamber, the emergency session will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre’s Dome. This unexpected gathering underscores the urgency of the issues at hand and the need for swift parliamentary action.
