The Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Education have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to commence the the production of school uniforms, furniture and 12 million sanitary pads for public schools across the country.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak indicated that the MoU will provide a minimum of 30% concession for the production and supply of school furniture to the Ministry of Interior through the Ghana Prisons Service.
25% of the concession will also be used for the implementation of government’s free sanitary pads program.
“We will ensure value for money and transparency in public procurement by anchoring production within state-owned industrial system subject to clear oversight,” Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak said while stressing of the fact that government will ensure value for money and make sure quality is delivered.
In her speech at the ceremony, Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie noted that the initiative will help prisoners earn some money while going though reformation.
“Apart from what was said earlier, which is helping them to be law abiding while in prison and also creating the opportunity for them to earn income while in prison, the ultimate goal is to ensure that the public is safe.”
Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu while speaking said the education ministry will set aside budget to help the Ghana Prison Service meet the production of the 12 million sanitary pads.
“We definitely will find some budget line to support Ghana Prisons Service to udertake the production of these sanitary pads. Into 2026, we will be mindful and guided by the MoU when we are undertaking the procurement.
