Rushing to appoint a new Black Stars coach is dangerous – Saani Daara cautions to GFA

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Saani Daara, has cautioned that appointing authorities should not rush to settle on a new trainer for the Black Stars.

His remarks come in the wake of the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo following the team’s back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany in the March international friendly games.

Speaking on Citi News, Saani Daara cautioned that the decision must be taken with careful planning, given the team’s ongoing transition.

He noted that although there is urgency to appoint a new coach ahead of upcoming international fixtures, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) must prioritize continuity and long-term development.

“While we are looking for a coach now, we must also think about the future. We have a very young squad with the potential to do well. Most of the players are in their early 20s, so we need a coach who will not only focus on the World Cup but can also stay long-term and stabilize the team for sustained success,” he stated.

The search has already generated interest, with several high-profile coaches reportedly linked to the job, with Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku revealing that over 600 coaches have applied for the vacant job.

He added that the new Black Stars coach will be appointed within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2, fixtures that form part of their build-up to the global showpiece.

Ghana, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, with ambitions of advancing beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic 2010 campaign.
