Political activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has rejected claims that he has abandoned his campaign for a new Constitution following the change in government.
Responding to remarks by NPP member P.K. Sarpong, Barker-Vormawor said his position on constitutional reform has remained consistent.
“Everyone who knows me knows my consistent position on the idea that piece-meal amendments are fundamentally limited and will not cure the design flaw that inhibits the 1992 Constitution,” he wrote.
He said Democracy Hub has continued to campaign for constitutional reform even after President John Dramani Mahama assumed office.
“When Democracy Hub, even after the current President was elected, organised a forum at the British Council on the theme ‘The Case for a New Constitution,’ it was addressed by several prominent experts,” he stated.
Barker-Vormawor explained that although he believes a new Constitution is the preferred solution, he also supported ongoing amendment efforts.
“I supported the Kyei-Mensah/Clara Kasser-Tee effort because the political process seems fixated at this stage on only textual reforms,” he said.
According to him, Democracy Hub’s campaign has not changed.
“The New Constitution for a New Generation remains Democracy Hub’s main campaign,” he added.
He expressed confidence that support for the proposal would continue to grow.
“The New Constitution call is not an idea that will die. Critical mass of opinion will coalesce around it soon.”
