The Government has announced that Latvian authorities have appointed new investigators and placed the investigation into the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia under the direct supervision of Latvia’s Interior Ministry.

The move follows engagements by a Ghanaian delegation led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who travelled to Latvia to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student, died in June 2025 in Latvia. Local authorities initially described the incident as a fall from a hostel building. His family has questioned that account and called for further investigations, citing concerns about the circumstances leading to his death.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined the outcome of the diplomatic engagement.

The delegation to Latvia included forensic experts, a pathologist, lawyers, Ghana’s Ambassador and consular officers from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin. Nana Agyei’s mother and aunt also attended meetings with Latvian officials as family representatives.

The Ghanaian team met Latvia’s Foreign Minister, the Interior Minister, police chiefs, state prosecutors and investigators handling the case. According to the statement, Latvian authorities said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

The statement added that Latvia’s Interior Ministry has now taken direct oversight of the case and assigned new investigators.

Nana Agyei’s mother submitted a formal statement to Latvian authorities for inclusion in the official record. The Ministry said further information would be submitted where necessary.

The Government of Ghana has also requested that the final investigative report be made available to the family. The statement indicated that Latvian authorities did not object to the request.

The Ministry said it would continue to engage with its Latvian counterparts and keep the family informed. It also urged the public to refrain from speculation while investigations are ongoing.
