Over 50 peasant farmers in Abrewapong, a farming community near Agogo in the Asante Akyem north of the Ashanti Region, are currently distressed due to the forceful takeover and destruction of their farmlands by forestry commission and Eco Planet to plant bamboo.
The crops destroyed on farms include, Plantain, Onion Pepper, tomato and cocoyam.
The Chiefs and the people of Abrewapong, were left in shock when forestry commission and Eco Planet, protected by armed men, stormed the farm, destroying over 300-acre plantation.
Chief of Abrewapong Nana Barima Opoku Nyantakyi speaking in an interview with Top News accused the government of watching aloof whiles Eco Planet Bamboo in collaboration with the forestry commission to cut down large farmland of plantain and other farm produce to plant bamboo
This he said has led to loss of investment by farmers from loans acquired
According to him, their plantains have been cut down at a time the government has built a plantain factory in the area to process
The farmers said their source of livelihood have been destroyed following the destruction of their crops and farmland
They appealed to President Akufo Addo and the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akufo Dampare to intervene to avert chaos.
