President John Dramani Mahama will undertake a four-day official visit to Kingston, Jamaica, from August 2 to 5, 2026, as part of efforts to deepen Ghana’s relations with Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
The visit is expected to strengthen the long-standing historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Jamaica while promoting closer engagement with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
A statement issued by the Presidency and signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the visit followed Ghana’s recent support and relief assistance to Jamaica after a major natural disaster.
Mr Ofosu said the visit would reaffirm Ghana’s support for its Caribbean partners and reflect the enduring links between Africa and its Diaspora.
As part of the visit, President Mahama will participate in a high-level Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with the Vice-Chancellor of the university and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, Sir Hilary Beckles.
The dialogue forms part of ongoing efforts by the African Union and CARICOM to pursue reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.
President Mahama is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the Jamaican government at the Office of the Prime Minister on trade, culture and South-South cooperation.
He will address a joint sitting of the Houses of Parliament at George William Gordon House and participate in a Trade and Investment Dialogue. The President will also tour the Kingston Freeport at the invitation of the Port Authority of Jamaica.
The Leader of the Opposition in Jamaica, Mr Mark Golding, is expected to pay a courtesy call on President Mahama during the visit.
As part of activities marking Jamaica’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Mahama will attend the “Mello-Go-Roun” cultural event at the National Arena.
President Mahama will also lay a wreath at the shrine of Jamaica’s National Hero, the Right Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, at the National Heroes Park.
He will visit the Seville Heritage Park in St Ann, where the preserved Ghanaian Village Houses stand as a reminder of the shared ancestry between Ghana and Jamaica.
The Governor-General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Allen, and Lady Allen, will host a state dinner in honour of President Mahama at King’s House.
The official visit will end on August 5, 2026
