The Minority in Parliament says it will demand a forensic audit of the revelations made in a supposed secret tape about Ghana’s police chief.

The leader of the Caucus, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has stated that it is the only way the real culprits behind the plot to oust the IGP and also manipulate the 2024 election can be fished out and dealt with according to law.

He said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs will not accept any attempts by the government and its allies to undermine the democracy the country is currently enjoying.

The Ajumako Enyan Essiam MP in an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, July 12, insisted that his side will not renege in its quest for a thorough investigation.

“This constitution is in its 31st year and we are saying that this is the only republic that has been the most enduring and we should do whatever it takes to preserve it.”

“We’ve heard a Police Commissioner saying that the Inspector General of Police should be removed from office because if he stays, he will not allow them to rig an election.”

“I was at Assin North and I saw professionalism from the Ghana Police Service. I saw it and I am not the only one. All the NPP want the police to do is for them not to be professional but rather side with the government of the day and aid them in their rigging activities, and because he didn’t do that, he should be removed and bring someone that will do that. So we on the Minority are clear in our minds that we will demand a forensic audit of the tape.”

About the leaked tape

The said secret audio details an alleged plot by persons suspected to be high-ranking officials of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), and a top member of the Ghana Police Service to remove the current Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office ahead of the 2024 elections.

The yet-to-be named individuals involved in the recorded conversation expressed frustration over the IGP’s alleged reluctance to align the Police Service’s activities with the interests of the ruling party.

They raised concerns about his leadership style and rumoured association with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I know there are others who are also good for this position. If I don’t get it and this man is changed and those people that we think are our men get it, [I will be happy]… Because we need to break this 8. That is important, we need to break the 8… Because I wouldn’t want a doctor to become the flagbearer and then we lose the elections,” one of the men who is reportedly a police officer in the audio is heard saying.

As a result, they concluded that achieving the NPP’s ‘Breaking the 8’ agenda, would be impossible with Dampare as the head of the police.
