The Assin Nsuaem-Kyekyewere Circuit Court in the Assin South District of the Central Region has sentenced a 26-year-old farmer, Frank Owusu, to 30 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty on two counts of robbery and possession of a firearm without lawful authority.

Owusu pleaded guilty to both charges. He was sentenced to 30 years for robbery and two months for unlawful possession of a firearm, with the sentences to run concurrently.

The presiding judge, His Lordship Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey, handed down the sentence after the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nana George Akomeah, presented compelling evidence.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on March 28, 2025, at about 11 p.m. when the complainant, a baker named Lucy Bremah, was asleep with her two children at her residence in Assin Praso. Owusu, alias “Lifer”, armed with a locally manufactured pistol, unlawfully entered her room.

ASP Akomeah told the court that Owusu stole two mobile phones valued at GH₵250 and a pair of reading glasses worth GH₵200. He then pointed the pistol at the complainant and threatened to kill her if she did not surrender her money. Out of fear, Ms Bremah handed over GH₵3,000 in a container, after which Owusu fled.

Some tenants gave chase and confronted him at the Assin Adansi school park, managing to retrieve the pistol and the stolen phones after a struggle. However, Owusu escaped with the money.

The matter was reported to the police the next day, and Owusu was later arrested on September 27, 2025. During interrogation, he admitted to possessing the firearm and committing the robbery.

The judge expressed concern over the growing incidence of robbery in rural communities, stressing that the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others.
