Former Big Brother Africa (BBNaija) housemate Bayo Okoh, one of the Nigerian contestants on the inaugural edition of the pan-African reality television show, has died.

Okoh’s death was announced on Saturday, August 8, by media personality Matilda Duncan, who shared photographs of the former reality television star on Instagram while mourning his passing.

Duncan expressed shock over the death, lamenting what she described as a succession of deaths.

“Please God, what is happening? This is too much—one death after another,” she wrote in the post.

Her announcement triggered an outpouring of grief from fans and people who remembered Okoh from the first season of Big Brother Africa in 2003.

Several commenters described the  news as painful and prayed for his soul, while others recalled moments from his time on the reality show.

One commenter wrote, “Oh Bayo, may your soul rest in peace,” while another described him as a “brother” and mourned his passing.

Another fan recalled recently discussing Okoh with her husband while remembering his experience on the show, adding to the emotional reactions that followed the announcement.

Okoh, whose full name was Alexander Adebayo Adetomiwa Okoh, represented Nigeria in the first season of Big Brother Africa, which began in May 2003.

He was one of 12 housemates from across Africa who participated in the inaugural edition of the reality show. At the time, Okoh was identified as a 28-year-old economist. He spent 91 days in the house before being evicted, finishing seventh in the competition.

The first season, which ran for 106 days, featured contestants from 12 African countries and was eventually won by Zambia’s Cherise Makubale, with Tanzania’s Mwisho Mwampamba finishing as runner-up.

Okoh became one of the early Nigerian faces associated with Big Brother Africa at a time when the reality television format was still new to audiences across the continent.

The inaugural season subsequently became a landmark in African television history, attracting widespread attention and helping establish reality television as a major part of African popular culture. Contemporary accounts describe the first edition as a major television phenomenon across the continent.

His death has therefore revived memories of the pioneering cast and the role they played in introducing Big Brother Africa to millions of viewers.

However, the cause and circumstances of Okoh’s death have not been disclosed publicly. Premium Times reported that no official statement from his family had been made public regarding the cause of death at the time of its report.
