The Greater Accra Regional Youth Wing of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its weight behind Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.
According to them, Dr Bawumia has demonstrated his proficiency as a competent leader both in the capacity of Vice President and in his previous job as an economist and as a banker.
At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, June 15, 2023, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser, Mandela Wiafe Edward said the veep remains the suitable candidate to break the 8 for the NPP.
“We further believe that H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidature will not only help in breaking the 8 but will also benefit the youth of our country most especially the Greater Accra Regional Youth Wing. His efforts in digitizing the economy and improving access to technology demonstrate his understanding of the contemporary challenges facing the young people of today. We are confident that H-E Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia will continue to prioritize the need of the youth if elected as flag bearer for the New Patriotic Party and subsequently the President of the Republic of Ghana.”
A report filed by our reporter Yesmeen Abubakar Tetteh indicates that the group also touted the credentials of the veep which puts him in pole position over the other candidates.
“Over the years H.E. the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana has demonstrated a high sense of commitment, loyalty, inclusion, hard work, integrity, compassion, humility and accessibility. H-E the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana has made significant contributions to the development of the New Patriotic Party and he was a Co-Chair of the economic policy coordinating committee under former President John Agyekum Kuffuor. He was a key member of the government technical negotiating team for HIPC in 2001 where the team successfully negotiated a four-billion dollar relief for Ghana that helped in stabilizing the economy. He was also the chairman of the Capital Market Committee which made Ghana the first post-HIPC country in the world to access the international capital market. He was a key member of the team that implemented the re-denomination of the Ghana Cedi, e-zwich and the Bank of Ghana’s inflation targeting framework.”
Mandela also highlighted the immense contribution of Dr Bawumia to the party’s rank and file.
“The Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has contributed materially and financially to activities of the party from the polling stations through the National level. In every election, he directly supported candidates running for all positions in the party at all levels. In recent times, he paid for the ID card of every delegate including you and I. He was a member of the 2012 and 2016 manifesto committees, and personally chaired the 2020 manifesto committee.”
The Vice President Dr Bawumia is expected to submit his nomination forms for the flagbearer position later today, Friday, June 16, 2023.
