The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says he is unhappy that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Speaking in an interview with Ambassador TV host Osei Kwadwo, monitored by MyNewsGH.com, Mr Asiedu Nketiah said the sentence will weaken Wontumi’s chances of becoming National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party.
“I was praying hard for Chairman Wontumi to become the National Chairman of the NPP because he is the weakest among all the aspirants vying for that position,” he stated.
Using a football analogy, he added: “If you are going to play a football match and your opponent comes with an injured goalkeeper, won’t it make the match easy for you to win? So when Wontumi becomes National Chairman for the NPP, the 2028 elections will be one of the easiest for the NDC.”
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah also expressed hope that Kwame Baffoe Abronye retains his position as Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP.
“Now that Chairman Wontumi is facing a 20-year prison sentence, I pray Kwame Baffoe Abronye maintains his seat as Bono Regional Chairman because his leadership style is collapsing the NPP in the region,” he said.
“There’s a saying by a philosopher: ‘Do not interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.’ So when our opponent leaders are making mistakes, it is our duty to pray for them to continue, to make our work easier in achieving our goals,” he added.
He further claimed: “K.A. Busia cannot boast about any seat in the Bono Region under the leadership of Abronye because I won Wenchi East and West constituencies in the Bono Region during the 2024 general elections.”
