The Speaker of Parliament, Rt, Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin has directed the Minister of Works and Housing Hon. Francis Asenso Boakye and Minister for Finance Hon. Ken Ofori Atta to appear before the House to brief them on steps taken to address the perenial floods across the country.
The Minority Chief Whip Kwame Agbozaa reading a statement on the floor of parliament raised concerns over the downpour on Wednesday that has rendered scores of residents in parts of Accra homeless with some gone missing.
Agboza requested that the Minister of Works and Housing address the House about the steps that have been taken to alleviate persistent flooding throughout the Nation as the rains get heavier.
Frank Annor-Dompreh, the majority chief whip, acknowledged that the works and housing minister should brief the house on the matter. He asked the chairman of the Works and Housing Committee of Parliament to take initiative in their job.
Members of the committee must tour flood-prone areas, according to him, and report their findings to the house.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, requested that officials from the Ministries of Works and Housing and Finance appear before the house by the end of the next week. He highlighted that the passing of the Budget Act will assist address the problem.
The summoned ministers are expected to share information on the government’s plans for dealing with the canker, according to the Speaker.
“Minister responsible for Works and Housing be programmed by the Business Committee to appear before the House together with the Minister of Finance to give us a brief on the action being taken to make this a thing of the past, and so we expect that at latest before the end of next week, these ministers should appear before us.”
“If the substantive minister is not there, there is a minister of state at the Ministry that can come and represent him, and this is a very important matter and one of the ways we could support national leadership to find a solution is for us to pass the budget Act.”
