Popular Ghanaian actor and comedian, Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, widely known as Dr Likee or Akabenezer, has disclosed how a special encounter with President John Dramani Mahama changed his decision to retire from the movie industry.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Giovanni Caleb on TV3’s Showbiz 360, the comic actor shared how an unexpected meeting at the airport reignited his passion for creating comedy skits and movies.
According to Akabenezer, he had made up his mind to step away from the profession after spending several years in the movie industry. However, that decision took a dramatic turn after he met President Mahama, who warmly greeted him and revealed that he regularly watches and enjoys his comedy skits.
“I wanted to retire, but after meeting President John Dramani Mahama and hearing him say he watches my skits, I was encouraged to continue,” he said.
Recounting the emotional moment, he added:
“He is my father. After meeting him, I got encouraged, because I had plans to quit after several years in the movie industry. But the day I met the president and he told me he watches my skits a lot and laughs hard anytime he does so, I was shocked and teary. So I vowed that even if I am ill, I will continue to make skits for people to watch. It’s not easy for someone who is always busy to tell you that he takes time to watch your skits. It shows that he really has a close eye on us.”
Dr Likee emphasized that the President’s words served as a major motivation, assuring him that his work is impactful and appreciated even at the highest levels of leadership.
Dr Likee has become one of Ghana’s most influential comic actors in recent years. Known for his unique facial expressions, witty dialogue, and exaggerated storytelling style, he has carved a niche for himself in short comedy skits and low-budget local films that resonate strongly with audiences. His productions often feature a blend of humor, everyday Ghanaian experiences, and moral lessons, making them widely shared on social media platforms. Beyond acting, he is also a brand ambassador and a key figure in Kumawood’s evolving digital comedy space.
His story highlights how a few words of encouragement can reignite purpose and push creatives to keep going despite challenges.
