Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Obaapa Christy has disclosed that she charges for every performance she makes, including events organized by friends, pastors, or people she is familiar with.

Speaking on UTV’s U-Cook Show, hosted by Empress Gifty, the multiple award-winning singer explained that singing is her full-time profession and source of livelihood, so she treats it with the same seriousness as any other job.

Her comment came during a discussion in which Empress Gifty asked whether she had ever been invited to a church by a pastor who later failed to pay her. In response, Obaapa Christy said she always makes sure her payment is settled immediately after each performance before leaving the venue, regardless of who the organizer is.

She explained that over the years, she has learned not to mix business with personal relationships when it comes to her career, as doing so often leads to disappointment. To her, taking payment is not about greed but about respecting her craft and acknowledging the time, effort, and resources that go into preparing for a performance. “I make sure my payment is settled immediately after every performance before I leave the venue, no matter who the organizer is.”

The gospel star emphasized that those who fail to pay after receiving a service show a lack of respect for the professional work of others.  She further supported her stance with a biblical reference from 2 Thessalonians 3:10, which says, “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” She said the verse serves as a reminder that even in ministry, hard work deserves fair reward.

The discussion forms part of the ongoing debate within the gospel music industry on whether gospel musicians should charge for performances in churches or at Christian events. Obaapa Christy’s remarks add to the growing call for artists to balance ministry with professionalism and ensure that their contributions are valued.
