Following the recent establishment of the National Fugu Day, Kente weavers in Bonwire, Ashanti Region, have called on the government to declare a National Kente Day.
According to them, the move will properly promote local textiles as well as preserve Ghana’s indigenous cultural heritage.
The Ghana Tourism Authority announced Wednesdays as National Fugu Day, a day set aside to specially celebrate the fabric, woven mainly in the Northern part of the country.
The GTA arrived at this decision of establishing a National Fugu Day after president Mahama’s viral visit to Zambia, where the Fugu/Batakari took center stage.
The Kente weavers mentions that the declaration of Kente Day will go a long way to preserve Ghana’s royal identity and promote tradition, bring more economic benefits to the weavers in Bonwire.
“The declaration of a National Kente Day would ensure inclusiveness, boost patronage for locally woven kente, create jobs, and help sustain the centuries-old craft passed down through generations,” the weavers stated.
